Sphaerex Fungicide now available to growers in Eastern Canada

  • Sphaerex will help provide growers with yield performance and grain quality across wheat, barley, oat, rye, and triticale crops

CALGARY, ALBERTA, September 22, 2022 – BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions (BASF) is bringing its cereal fungicide Sphaerex® to Eastern Canadian growers for the 2023 growing season. Offering the combined power of two active ingredients, Prothioconazole and Metconazole, Sphaerex helps provide growers with premium management of fusarium head blight (FHB) and late-season leaf diseases. Sphaerex helps provide growers with yield increases, and exceptional quality management to drive improved cereal profitability and greater disease efficacy.

“Farmers across Eastern Canada have continued to face setbacks related to the ongoing pressure of regional challenges associated with FHB,” said Mark Shillingford, Director of Marketing at BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions. “This has resulted in annual losses amounting to upwards of $300 million[1]. With Sphaerex providing effective management of deoxynivalenol (DON), we’re excited to offer this solution to our Eastern Canadian growers.”

Sphaerex’s formulation is registered for use across a wide range of key cereal crops, which make up Canada’s largest field crops in terms of area, including wheat, barley, oats, rye, and triticale. In addition to its performance on FHB, Sphaerex provides consistent efficacy on all major leaf diseases such as rusts, tan spot, septoria in wheat; scald, spot, and net blotch in barley; and crown rust in oats. New to the label, Sphaerex now offers protection against ergot, a fungal disease that infects many cereals and has well-known impacts on grain quality.

“FHB continues to pose complex and ever-evolving challenges,” said Rob Miller, Technical Development Manager at BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions. “With this in mind, we’re constantly innovating and looking to find ways to bring new and enhanced solutions to growers.”

BASF provides growers and retail and distribution customers with one of the most robust product pipelines in the industry. To learn more about Sphaerex, please visit www.agsolutions.ca
